Global Climate Action Summit begins on October 17, Monday
Kozhikode: The Global Climate Action Summit of international universities kicks off on October 17 at Makaz Knowledge City. The three-day summit will witness intensive deliberations on how to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Chief Minister of Kerala Sri Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the summit, the Chairman of League of International Islamic Universities Dr Usamah Mohamed Hassan Elabed will chair the opening ceremony and Dr Abdul Hakeem Azhari will deliver the keynote address.
The Summit is co-hosted by the League of Islamic Universities with its headquarters in Cairo and Jamia Markaz of Calicut. This is the first time in the history of Kerala that such a comprehensive international summit of climate scientists, diplomates, university leaders and researchers taking place here. Over two hundred delegates from 40 countries are participating in the summit. More than 80 papers from various universities will be present on various seminars. In addition to the discourses on climate action, an expo showcasing the latest inventions, devices, projects and schemes connected with climate action, is organised.
The League of Islamic Universities is a confederation of around 200 international universities from all over the world. The summit will release the Malabar Climate Action Declaration which will unequivocally state our stance in this regard and the course of action the summit proposes. The Declaration will include instructions for scientifically tackling the threats posed by climate change and the formation of an environment friendly lifestyle through curricular changes and social interventions. It is speculated that the Malabar Declaration will be considered as the latest guideline for the international community specifying what course of action they should embrace on.
A number of pre-summit events are underway such as Inter-Generation Dialogues, Feel the Climate Programme, Eco Walk, Bird Watchers’ Evening, Afforestation Drive, etc. The Afforestation Drive will cover over an area of 100 acres of land in and out of Kerala.
